Warwick academic appeal: grounds and time limit

Rule checked against University of Warwick's own pages on .

You must submit the Regulation 42 Academic Appeal Form within 10 University Working Days of the date of notification of the decision of the Board of Examiners that is the subject of the appeal. Before you submit, talk to your home department, such as your Personal Tutor or Supervisor, because a Board of Examiners may sometimes resolve issues directly. The official pages we read do not set out the full list of grounds; confirm the grounds on the Regulation 42 Academic Appeal Form and the university's academic appeals page.

Time limit to appeal
Appeals must be submitted within 10 University Working Days of the date you are notified of the Board of Examiners' decision.[1]
What to try first
Before submitting an appeal, talk to your home department (for example, your Personal Tutor or Supervisor), since a Board of Examiners may sometimes resolve issues directly.[2]
Where to submit
Submit the appeal in writing on the Regulation 42 Academic Appeal Form, following the instructions on the form.[1]
If that fails
If an Appeals Review Panel or Appeals Panel rejects the appeal, you may submit a written Request for Review of the appeals process to the Academic Registrar.[1]
External review
If you are dissatisfied with the appeal outcome and do not meet the grounds for a review of the appeals process, you may ask the Academic Registrar for a Completion of Procedures letter.[1]

Check the decision and the deadline

The time limit starts on the date of notification of the decision of the Board of Examiners that is the subject of the appeal. You must submit within 10 University Working Days of that date. The regulation says all its deadlines are calculated in University Working Days. Read the letter or email that gave the notification and note the date on it. Keep a copy of the notification and of anything you send.

Before you submit

  1. Talk to your home department, such as your Personal Tutor or Supervisor. The university's text says a Board of Examiners may sometimes resolve issues directly without a formal appeal.
  2. Read the Regulation 42 Academic Appeal Form and the university's academic appeals page. The form gives the instructions for submitting the appeal. The pages we read do not give the full list of grounds. Confirm the grounds that apply to your decision on the form and the appeals page. The text also says decisions about the academic merit of a piece of work are academic judgements and cannot be challenged through this or any other Regulation.
  3. Gather true evidence. The procedure is evidence based. It is your responsibility to provide sufficient satisfactory documentary evidence to support the contents of the appeal. The university may investigate the authenticity of documents.

What happens after you submit

The appeal must be submitted in writing on the Regulation 42 Academic Appeal Form and submitted as instructed on the Form. The university will communicate with you at your University email address and/or personal email address specified on your appeal form. Any University decision that is the subject of an appeal remains in force while the appeal is being considered, and you must abide by that decision unless and until it has been overturned. The university will aim to complete the academic appeals process within 80 University Working Days. If an Appeals Panel decides your appeal, the outcome is communicated in writing with reasons within 10 University Working Days of the date of the decision.

If the appeal is rejected

If an Appeals Review Panel or Appeals Panel rejects the appeal, you may submit a written Request for Review of the appeals process to the Academic Registrar. You must do that within 10 University Working Days of the date of the written outcome of the appeal to the Academic Registrar. A review of the appeals process will only be considered on two grounds: you have evidence of mitigation that could not have been made available at an earlier stage, and you can evidence good reason why it could not have been made available earlier; or there is evidence of procedural irregularity in the conduct of the appeals process.

If you are dissatisfied with the appeal outcome and do not meet the grounds for a review of the appeals process, you may ask the Academic Registrar for a Completion of Procedures letter following the Appeals Review Panel or Appeals Panel outcome. The letter is provided within 10 University Working Days. The decision of the Academic Registrar in reviewing the appeals process is the final decision of the University.

Read your own letter and the Regulation 42 form carefully. Keep copies of what you submit and what you receive.
