King's resits: attempts, mark cap and timing explained

Rule checked against King's College London's own pages on .

King's normally offers one reassessment opportunity in each failed module, and after reassessment the final overall module mark is capped at the relevant pass mark unless the core competency clause applies. The pages we read do not state an application deadline; they say exams failed in assessment period one or two are reassessed in assessment period three of the same academic year. Read your own letter and module specification first, because the module specification sets out how you will be reassessed and any additional conditions.

How many attempts
Students are normally offered one reassessment opportunity in each failed module.[1]
Mark cap on a resit
After reassessment, the final overall module mark is capped at the relevant pass mark, unless the core competency clause applies.[1]
When resits happen
Students who fail exams held in assessment period one or two are reassessed in assessment period three of the same academic year.[1]
If you had accepted circumstances
If mitigating circumstances are accepted, the assessment is deferred and treated as a first attempt: it is marked as normal and is not capped at the pass mark.[2]
If you fail the resit
A student who has failed one or more modules and used all reassessment and compensation/condonement opportunities has their registration terminated.[1]

Read your letter and module specification first

Start with the letter you have received and the module specification for the failed module. The module specification sets out how you will be reassessed, whether reassessment may be in a different format from the original assessment, and any additional conditions attached to it. Check what module and components are affected, the assessment period named, and any instructions about what you need to do. Keep copies of what you submit and of messages you send or receive. If anything in the letter is unclear, ask the university using the contact route in that letter or on the official page. The pages we read do not state a deadline for applying for reassessment, so confirm the deadline with the university or in your own letter. Do not guess a date from this page.

How many attempts and what the mark is capped at

King's normally offers one reassessment opportunity in each failed module. The facts say this includes where you fail to obtain a qualifying mark in a module or module component, where you fail a module with a mark outside the condonable range, and where you fail to achieve a pass mark in a core module. After reassessment, the final overall module mark is capped at the relevant pass mark, unless the core competency clause applies. For reassessment of module components, individual assessment marks are recorded uncapped on your record. If you do not achieve a pass mark at reassessment, the highest mark of any attempt is recorded on your record and transcript.

If you have mitigating circumstances and they are accepted, the assessment is deferred and treated as a first attempt. It is marked as normal and is not capped at the pass mark. Any evidence you provide in support must be true.

When reassessment happens

Students who fail exams held in assessment period one or two are reassessed in assessment period three of the same academic year. The pages we read do not state a separate application deadline. They also say that, with the exception of cases where students are required to resit the assessment with attendance, all reassessment attempts will normally be held prior to the start of the next academic year. For King's Digital Category A and Category B (old) programmes, reassessment will normally take place in the next teaching period unless you submit a mitigating circumstances request or take a formal interruption of study. Check your own module and programme details rather than applying one timing rule to every case.

What happens after and where to get help

If you fail one or more modules and use all reassessment and compensation/condonement opportunities, the facts say your registration is terminated. You may qualify for an exit award under the exit award regulations. Students retain the right to appeal under regulations 7.5-7.41. This page does not set out the grounds or deadline for an appeal; check the official regulations and your letter.

You can talk to KCLSU Advice, the free student advocate listed under Free help. Take your letter, module specification and any relevant correspondence with you. Ask them to explain the options that apply to your case. Keep your own copies of everything you submit.
