Leeds resits: attempts, mark cap and when it happens

Rule checked against University of Leeds's own pages on .

Leeds allows two attempts to pass a module: the first attempt and one reassessment. The reassessment must be taken at the next available opportunity, which is normally in July or August, unless your parent School grants specific permission to defer and that permission must be documented. First, read your own letter and check your module level, because the reassessment mark is capped at 40 for undergraduate modules (FHEQ levels 4 to 6) and 50 for postgraduate taught modules (FHEQ level 7).

How many attempts
Students get two attempts to pass a module: the first attempt and one reassessment.[1]
Mark cap on a resit
For undergraduate modules (FHEQ levels 4 to 6), the maximum mark on the reassessment attempt is 40.[1]
When resits happen
Reassessments must be taken at the next available opportunity, which is normally in July or August.[2]
If you had accepted circumstances
If mitigating circumstances are accepted, one type of additional consideration is a further attempt at the next resit opportunity, either as a first attempt (uncapped mark) or a resit (capped mark).[3]
If you fail the resit
Beyond the standard two attempts, one further attempt may be permitted on Engineering Council-compliant programmes where the student has passed at least 100 credits (undergraduate) or 150 credits (taught postgraduate).[1]

Leeds allows two attempts to pass a module: the first attempt and one reassessment. Check your own letter and your module level first, because the mark cap depends on whether the module is undergraduate FHEQ level 4 to 6 or postgraduate taught FHEQ level 7.

What to do first

  1. Read your own letter carefully. Keep a copy of the letter and any documents you send.
  2. Check the module level. For an undergraduate module at FHEQ levels 4 to 6, the maximum mark on the reassessment attempt is 40. For a postgraduate taught module at FHEQ level 7, the maximum mark is 50. The cap applies to the reassessment attempt.
  3. Check the timing rule. Reassessments must be taken at the next available opportunity, which is normally in July or August, unless your parent School grants specific permission to defer the assessment, and that permission must be documented. The pages we read do not state exact dates for the next opportunity; confirm them with your parent School.
  4. If you have mitigating circumstances, read the university's page and your own letter for the process. The pages we read do not state the evidence requirements or deadlines. Talk to LUU Advice if you need help understanding the process. Any evidence you use must be true evidence.

How many attempts you get

A student is permitted two attempts to pass a module: the first attempt and one reassessment. Attempts must be taken at the next available opportunity. If mitigating circumstances are accepted, one type of additional consideration is a further attempt at the next resit opportunity, either as a first attempt with an uncapped mark or as a resit with a capped mark. The pages we read do not state the evidence rules for that application. Beyond the standard two attempts, one further attempt may be permitted on Engineering Council-compliant programmes where the student has passed at least 100 credits at the current level for undergraduate programmes or 150 credits for taught postgraduate programmes. The programme specification defines the full criteria. This is a permission, not a standard extra attempt. Students on integrated foundation years are permitted a reassessment where they have passed modules but have not achieved the progression requirements of their designated programme; the mark on that reassessment is not capped at 40.

What the mark cap means

For undergraduate modules at FHEQ levels 4 to 6, the maximum mark on the reassessment attempt is 40. For postgraduate taught modules at FHEQ level 7, the maximum mark on the reassessment attempt is 50. The cap applies to the reassessment attempt. If a candidate takes a second attempt, or an exceptional third attempt on an Engineering Council-compliant programme, and gets a mark lower than the mark received for the first attempt, Leeds gives the higher of the two marks when calculating classification. That does not apply to a reassessment taken on a first attempt basis, because the original mark is expunged.

When it happens

Reassessments must be taken at the next available opportunity, which is normally in July or August. The exception is where your parent School grants specific permission to defer the assessment; that permission must be documented. The pages we read do not state exact dates. Check your own letter and confirm the date with your parent School. Do not assume a date from another year or another module.

If the result does not go your way

Read the outcome letter and any next-step instructions carefully. Keep copies of what you submitted and what you receive. The pages we read do not state appeal deadlines or grounds; confirm them with the university and talk to LUU Advice. If you are considering an application based on mitigating circumstances, use true evidence only and do not alter a document. The pages we read do not state what evidence is required; ask the university before you rely on a document.
