Griffith academic integrity notice: deadline and steps

Rule checked against Griffith University's own pages on .

You should respond to the decision maker's written notice within 14 days. If you do not, the decision maker will reach a decision based on the information available. First, read the notice to see whether you must respond in writing or meet the decision maker; you can be accompanied by someone for support.

Time to respond
You should respond to the decision maker's written notice within 14 days.[1]
What happens
A breach is either incomplete academic practice, handled through normal assignment feedback, or academic misconduct, which is handled formally: a decision maker sends a written notice, considers any response, then sends a closure letter with the decision.[1]
Who decides
For less serious breaches the Course Convenor decides. For more serious breaches the Dean, Learning and Teaching decides. For HDR candidates the Dean (Research) or the Dean (Griffith Graduate Research School) decides.[1]
Possible penalties
The page says misconduct may result in exclusion from further study. The closure letter sets out the educational or penalty response applied; specific penalties are not listed on the page.[1]
Support at a meeting
The decision maker's notice says whether you must respond in writing or meet them, and you can be accompanied by someone for support.[1]
Generative AI
Gateway Course assessments are designed to be completed without generative AI or other unauthorised assistance.[1]
Time limit to appeal
A review or appeal request must be submitted within 10 working days of receiving the decision. This is the general Griffith review and appeal time limit.[2]

Read the notice and note the response date

A potential academic integrity breach can go two ways. The university may treat it as incomplete academic practice and address it through normal assignment feedback. If it is treated as academic misconduct, it goes through a formal process. In that formal process, a decision maker emails you a written notice that details the identified breach. The notice also says whether you must respond in writing or meet the decision maker.

Read that notice carefully and check what it asks you to do. You should provide your response to the written notice within 14 days. If you do not provide a response within that timeframe, the decision maker will reach a decision based on the information available. Keep a copy of the notice and any correspondence.

Who decides and when it can move

For less serious breaches, the Course Convenor decides. For more serious breaches, the Dean, Learning and Teaching decides. For HDR candidates, the Dean (Research) decides less serious breaches and the Dean (Griffith Graduate Research School) decides more serious breaches. After your response, the decision maker considers the response and the evidence available. They will either make a decision for less serious breaches or request that the breach be deemed more serious and reassigned to the appropriate decision maker. You will be notified by email if the matter is referred to another decision maker.

Respond with the information the notice asks for

The notice tells you whether to respond in writing or meet the decision maker. You can be accompanied by someone for support if you meet the decision maker. If you respond in writing, answer the points in the notice and use true evidence you already have. Do not invent, exaggerate, backdate or alter anything. Keep a copy of what you submit and note when you sent it. For support, contact Advocacy, the free service listed under Free help.

If the notice involves unauthorised AI, the university page says Gateway Course assessments are designed to be completed without generative AI or other unauthorised assistance. That is a condition to keep in mind when you read the notice and prepare your response.

What happens after the response

The decision maker considers your response if you provide one, and the evidence available. The formal process ends with a closure letter that sets out the decision. The closure letter also sets out the educational or penalty response applied. The university page says misconduct may result in exclusion from further study. The pages we read do not list specific penalties; confirm any point about the penalty response with the decision maker when you receive the closure letter. Read the closure letter carefully and keep a copy.

If you want a review or appeal

A review or appeal request must be submitted within 10 working days of receiving the decision. This is the general Griffith review and appeal time limit. The request should include the decision you want reviewed or appealed, the date you received the decision, the reason you believe the decision should be reconsidered, the outcome you are seeking and any relevant supporting documents or information. Use true supporting documents. A review or appeal is used to formally challenge a decision that has its own review or appeal process. A complaint generally concerns something Griffith did or did not do, a service or process, or how you were treated.
