Check what special consideration covers
Special consideration covers any assessment item where your performance was seriously affected, or you were seriously disadvantaged when the assessment item was attempted. It does not apply to a re-attempted or re-submitted assessment item. Griffith lists acceptable grounds as illness, accident, temporary disability, bereavement, sporting or cultural commitment at state or international representative level, technical difficulties such as delays during your online exam or a technical difficulty preventing you from completing your online assessment, and other compassionate circumstances. Examples of other compassionate circumstances are serious illness of a family member or close relative, significant and unexpected employment problems or pressures, and significant relationship problems.
Assignment extensions are a separate application type at Griffith. They do not apply to exams or tests. For assignment extensions, up to and including three calendar days need no supporting documentation for written assignments, laboratory reports, logs of learning activities or academic development holistic assessments. Other assessment types, group assessment and longer extensions need documentation. Those extension rules sit beside the special consideration rules; use the application type that matches your assessment item.
Evidence that fits your reason
The documents depend on your reason. For medical, illness or disability grounds, Griffith lists a medical certificate or a letter of support from a health practitioner or professional as an example. For other compassionate circumstances, examples include an officially signed statutory declaration and a letter of support from Counselling and Wellbeing or Student Safety and Wellbeing. For personal safety issues, examples include a letter of support from Student Safety and Wellbeing, an officially signed statutory declaration and a police report. For an accident, examples include a fire officer report and an officially signed statutory declaration.
Use true evidence. Keep copies of what you submit. Do not change a document after it is issued. The Griffith page lists the examples for each reason, so check the entry that matches your situation before you attach anything.
What happens after you apply
Griffith lists these possible outcomes: approved with a final grade recommended based on your performance across the course; approved including an opportunity to provide another assessment task; approved with marks adjusted, which may not always result in a change of grade; or declined. Use the assessment application link to view the status of your application. The pages we read do not state a processing time, so check the status through that link and read any message Griffith sends you.
If your application is declined
The pages we read do not set out a review or appeal process for a declined special consideration application. Read the outcome message and check the application link for what Griffith says you should do next. You can also talk to the free Advocacy service listed under Free help for guidance on your options.
