Monash special consideration: how to apply and by when
Rule checked against Monash University's own pages on .
If illness, a family emergency or something else outside your control affected an exam or assessment at Monash, start the special consideration application form. Eligible students must submit the application and supporting documentation as soon as possible and no later than 11.55pm in the time zone of the unit location on the due date of the affected task. If you cannot submit supporting documentation by that deadline because of circumstances beyond your control, you can provide it up to three calendar days after the deadline and must give the reasons for the delay in the form.
- Time limit to apply
- Apply as soon as possible, and no later than 11.55pm (time zone of the unit location) on the due date of the affected assessment task.[1]
- Where to apply
- Submit an application and supporting documentation through the special consideration application form.[1]
- Evidence you need
- Supporting documentation must be provided with the application. If it is delayed by circumstances beyond your control, you can provide it up to three calendar days after the deadline and must give reasons. If it is not provided within three calendar days of the application date (or the date you gave), the application is cancelled.[1]
- What you may get
- An approved application can give an extension (generally no more than 10 calendar days), an alternative assessment, an exemption for tasks weighted 10 per cent or less, or a deferred final assessment for scheduled final assessments.[1]
- If you apply late
- If you could not apply by the deadline because of extreme circumstances (for example hospitalisation), Student Services will review whether a late application can be accepted, and you must include evidence of those circumstances. Applications submitted after final results for the teaching period are released are not accepted.[1]
- Short extensions
- Short extensions of two calendar days are available for students experiencing short term difficult circumstances. They are not available for group assessments, in-class tests, practical assessments, mid-semester tests or scheduled final assessments.[1]
- If you sat the exam anyway
- If you attend the scheduled final assessment after being approved for a deferred assessment, the special consideration decision is revoked, you cannot sit the deferred assessment, and the mark for the original final assessment is included in your final mark.[1]
Apply through the special consideration form
If illness, a family emergency or something else outside your control affected an exam or assessment, use the special consideration application form. Eligible students submit the application and supporting documentation through that form. Apply as soon as possible. The final time is 11.55pm in the time zone of the unit location on the due date of the affected assessment task.
The official pages we read do not state the eligibility criteria. Check the university's special consideration page and ask MGA Advocacy service or Student Advocacy & Support (SAS) to confirm.
- Start the special consideration application form.
- Add the supporting documentation.
- Submit both through the form.
The procedure says the application is only assessed when all correct documentation is received.
Put supporting documents in with the form
Supporting documentation must be provided with the application. If circumstances beyond your control stop you providing it by the application deadline, you can provide it up to three calendar days after the deadline. Give the reasons for the delay in the application form.
If an ongoing delay with accessing the required documentation goes beyond three calendar days, the procedure says you must indicate in the application form the date by which you will provide the documentation and provide evidence to support the reasons for the delay. If supporting documentation is not provided within three calendar days of your application date or the date you indicated in the form, and no reason has been provided, the application is cancelled. The application is only assessed when all correct documentation is received.
Talk to MGA Advocacy service or Student Advocacy & Support (SAS), the free student advocates listed under Free help, if you want help understanding the form or the procedure. Keep copies of what you submit.
What an approved application can change
An approved application can give an extension. The extension length is generally no longer than 10 calendar days and is commensurate to your circumstances. It may be less for teaching periods with less than 12 teaching weeks. The revised due date can be any day except a University holiday or a day on which you have a scheduled final assessment.
For a mid-semester, in-class test or practical assessment, one new date to complete the task may be provided, taking into account your circumstances and any scheduling limitations.
Short extensions for short term difficulties
A short extension of two calendar days is available for short term difficult circumstances. It is not available for group assessments, in-class tests, practical assessments, mid-semester tests or scheduled final assessments.
If you miss the deadline or need a deferred assessment
If you could not apply by the deadline because of extreme circumstances, for example hospitalisation, Student Services will review whether a late application can be accepted. Include evidence of the extreme circumstances that prevented you from applying by the deadline in the application. Applications submitted after final results for the teaching period are released are not accepted.
The procedure says you must complete a deferred final assessment within 90 calendar days of the result release date of the teaching period. If you attend the scheduled final assessment after being approved for a deferred assessment, the special consideration decision is revoked. You will not be permitted to sit the deferred assessment, and the mark for the original final assessment will be included in your final mark. No further special consideration applications for that assessment task will be accepted.
