The review deadline starts with your exclusion email

If you think your exclusion is unreasonable, you can seek a review. The review request must be submitted within 10 working days from the date of your exclusion notice email. The clock starts on the date of that email, so keep the email and note the date. The pages we read do not state what happens if you do not submit within that period; check the student review and appeals information or your own letter if that applies to you.

What to do first

  1. Read your exclusion notice email and keep a copy.
  2. Speak with your Program Director to fully understand the decision behind your exclusion.
  3. If you still believe you were wrongly excluded, request an official review through Griffith’s student review and appeals process.
  4. Keep copies of what you submit and any response.

The student review and appeals information details the review and appeal process. The pages we read do not set out the exact form for the review request, so confirm the required form and where to lodge it through that process. General practical advice: use only true evidence, keep your own copies, and do not alter documents.

What makes a cleaner review request

A review is available if you think the exclusion is unreasonable. Your request should focus on that point and on the decision you were given. If you have true evidence that supports what you say, use it and keep copies. Do not invent or exaggerate a reason, backdate a document, alter a document, or obtain a certificate for an illness you did not have. Those steps can damage your position and do not help the process.

The pages we read do not state a time limit for submitting an appeal after a review outcome. If you receive a review outcome you are unsatisfied with, you can submit an appeal. The student review and appeals information details this process. Check your outcome letter and that process for the next time limit and step.

What happens while the review or appeal is running

You will be contacted as soon as possible about the review outcome. Under the Student Review and Appeals Policy, a decision that results in suspension or permanent exclusion is excepted from the right to continue studies during a review or appeal. Enrolment status is kept until the review and appeal process is completed.

If you are unsatisfied with the review outcome, you can submit an appeal. The student review and appeals information details this process. The pages we read do not state what happens after an appeal outcome, so read the outcome letter carefully and ask the free student advocate listed under Free help if you are unsure what step applies to you.

After the exclusion period

An exclusion period is two standard trimesters or nine calendar months, whichever is longer, from the date of notification. Trimester 3 does not count towards the exclusion period. During the exclusion period you cannot recommence study or attend classes in your current program or undertake another Griffith University program. The exclusion information also sets out restrictions on non-award courses. The exclusion is recorded on your Unofficial Academic Transcript and retained for five years after you have either graduated or terminated your enrolment with the University.

Once you have served the exclusion period, you may recommence study at Griffith. You will not return automatically. You must apply for readmission to your current program or apply to study a new program. An application can be lodged before the exclusion period has elapsed to meet University or other closing dates, but you cannot recommence your studies until the period of exclusion has elapsed. Applications are not automatically approved. Factors such as your changed circumstances, maturity and motivation will be considered along with your application. If you are seeking readmission to a Queensland Conservatorium program, you may need to submit your application sooner.
