USYD exclusion appeal: deadline and steps to review

Read your exclusion notification first
The first thing to do is read your stage 3 exclusion decision notification. It sets the deadline to submit your application for review. The pages we read do not give a number of days for exclusions, so confirm the deadline in that notification rather than relying on a general figure.
To apply for review, go to Sydney Student > My studies > Assessments. Upload your letter and your supporting documents there. Keep a copy of what you submit. If you are unsure about lodging the application, contact the Students' Representative Council (SRC) or Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association (SUPRA). The pages say their representatives may assist in preparing your application for review.
What to put in the review application
The pages set out what the application should include. Use true evidence. The core is details and evidence about the issues affecting your study, plus your proposed solutions to resolve those issues, as per a typical stage 3 response. You may need to provide additional detail or evidence.
Two conditions change what you add:
- If you did not respond to the show good cause by the due date, explain why you did not respond by that date.
- If you responded to show good cause but the faculty did not accept your submission, include a rebuttal of why you disagree with the faculty's reasons for excluding you.
If your application for review is related to conditional credit approval (academic approval) or mobility credit, the pages say to submit it to the Academic Panel using the Study abroad and exchange request form.
Keep attending while the appeal is pending
If you appeal an exclusion decision, continue attending any classes you are enrolled in while the appeal decision is pending. The pages state that even if the university makes the decision to exclude, it does not immediately cancel your enrolment because of your right to appeal. Follow the deadline in your notification and the steps above; do not treat the appeal as a reason to stop attending classes you are enrolled in.
What exclusion means if it stands
Exclusion means no re-enrolment in the course for at least four consecutive semesters (two calendar years). If you are allowed to re-enrol and you do not meet the academic progression requirements in the next semester, you may be asked to show good cause again.
Applying to return later
After two years, you can apply to return to the same award course, as long as it is still offered by the university. Readmission is not automatic. It is at the discretion of the Associate Dean of the faculty or school. In your application, you need to show that during your period of exclusion you have taken steps to support your future academic progression. The pages give examples: studying or work experience, or steps you have taken to address personal circumstances that previously prevented you from meeting progression requirements.
